What is a Rescue Pet?

What is Pet Overpopulation?

Do you know what pet overpopulation is? Pet overpopulation is why rescues always spay/neuter their animals. It means that there are too many pets and not enough homes. Many pets end up in county shelters because of this. There are three ways dog and cats can end up in county shelters. Can you guess all three? The first way is if they are a stray. Stray pets are ones that live on the streets. They get taken to the county shelter to help their owners look for them. Sometimes they don’t have a owner or the owner does not want them anymore. The second way is called owner turn-in. This is when owners bring their pets to the county shelter. This could be because their owners do not want them anymore or maybe they can not take care of them anymore. There are many different reasons for an owner turn in. The third way is from an abuse or neglect case. This is when an animal is being abused and or neglected in their current home. Animal control will go and get the animal out of the abusive home.

Are County Shelters Bad?

County shelters and animal control usually get a bad reputation because sometimes they have to put down animals. This usually is not their fault. County shelters only have so much room for dogs and cats, so when the shelters get too full, they have no choice then to euthanize. There are so many stray, abused, and turned in animals that the shelters can get full quickly. When strays get pulled off the streets, the shelters have to hold them for a certain period of time so that the owners have time to find them. The shelters can also scan for a microchip and help the animal find its home.

How do Rescues Help?

Rescues go and pull dogs out of county shelters to make more room for new dogs to come in. Rescues do not euthanize their animals so once a dog gets to a rescue, they are finally safe. By rescuing a dog or cat, you are actually saving two lives! By rescuing, you are saving the life of that animal, but you are also opening up a space for a new animal to come in and find its forever home. These animals have had a long journey but by finding a forever home they know that they are finally safe and they are ready to start a new chapter in their life.

Are Breeders Bad?

Getting a dog from a breeder is not a bad thing. Just like anything else, there are going to be good and bad breeders. A good breeder is someone who cares about the well being of the animals and is not just breeding for the money. There are breeders out there that do not care about their animals and just want the money. These breeders usually over breed the mom and do not care where the puppies go.

What are Puppy Mills?

Puppy mills is where most pet store get their puppies. Puppy mills are no more than a business. They have mom dogs stacked up in creates and they do not leave their create. These creates have no bottom besides the wires so that when the dogs go to the bathroom it just falls through. These mom dogs are forced to give birth over and over again and then take care of their puppys all in a small create. Sometime the puppies will fall though the bottom. Puppy mills are animal abuse so most of them are out of the way where people can not find them. When they are found, they are shut down. When a puppy mill get shut down, rescue groups will go in and get the dogs out. Most of these dogs can barely walk from being in a small create and many have never seen grass before. Puppy mills are just a business so if they do not make enough money they can be shut down. One way that you can help shut down these mills is by not buying puppies from pet stores. If the pet store can not sell the puppies they have, they will stop getting more from the puppy mills and eventually the puppy mills will be shut down.
